UTC Reading newsletter June 2016
Welcome to the June edition of the UTC newsletter. Take a look at the range of exciting activities that have been taking place throughout the past month.
Gold award for UTC Reading
Our work to raise awareness of STEM careers amongst primary school children has been recognised by STEMNet with a gold certificate.
Our recent schools events have included F1 in Schools, Children and the Chocolate Factory, ICE Bridge, and VEX Robotics, where children are invited to learn and compete in exciting environments.
Our role as a STEM Hub also supports the local education sector, by offering schools the opportunity to meet with industry professionals and take part in activities each term.
Students see behind the scenes at ITV studios
The seven winners of UTC Reading’s recent British Army challenge were rewarded with a trip to the ITV studios in London.
Students were driven to the studios and met on arrival by Tom Harrison, Head of Studio Engineering. Throughout the tour students were able to learn about what goes on behind the scenes of the programmes they regularly watch.
Students pitch to secure valuable work placement
Teams of UTC Reading students recently took part in a highly contested application process for the new Thames Water work experience placement.
Each team of three UTC Reading students pitched to secure a week-long placement with Thames Water, benefiting from mentoring, site visits and guidance in designing a solution to tackle the various challenges faced in the water industry.
QA Apprenticeships present potential careers to students
QA Apprenticeships, a great supporter of skills development and career pathways at UTC Reading, have been running a series of sessions for our students.
The aim of the sessions is to provide our students with information on the best careers available in the technology sector in Reading and the local area . We are delighted that some UTC students have already secured top tier apprenticeships with QA.
