Students inspired by maths event

A group of Sixth Form UTC Reading students joined a Maths Inspiration Event at the Hexagon Theatre on 29 February.

The presenters and guest speakers were among the top mathematicians and engineers in the country, including Dr Hannah Fry, Rob Eastaway, Dr Paul Shepherd and Matt Parker.

The students thoroughly enjoyed their talks, which were humorous as well as educational and focused on how students’ maths skills can be used in the real world.

Cimen Sahin, UTC Reading Mathematics Teacher and STEM Co-ordinator, said: “Students loved the humour and the real life examples. They loved the whole show, especially the interaction with the audience. I will definitely be applying the examples and facts from the show into my lessons in all sorts of ways for a long time.”

Year 13 UTC Reading student Rebecca Morris said: “This experience let me see how the maths we do in class can actually be put to use in the real world. The three speakers were really interesting and helped me understand the importance of maths.”

Year 12 UTC Reading student Ben Green said: “I’m not usually hugely keen on maths, but the event helped me feel more confident about what I could do with the maths I’m learning now. I learnt about how maths can be applied to almost anything, which I found really interesting. I would definitely go along to the event again.”
