Year 12 BTEC Level 3 Engineering (November 2016)

Some students in this lesson were working on making a Pad Saw Handle from a blank piece of aluminium (130 x 50 x 6mm thick). To make this, they had to show their skills on accurately marking out the work on the blank piece of metal using a rule, scribe and engineers square, reading from an engineering drawing. Using the workshop tools of a pillar drill, hacksaw and file they then had to produce a pad saw handle which tested their hand skills within the workshop. This completed work on the padsaw handle  was then inspected by their teacher on its accuracy to the engineering drawing.

Other students were working on a joining plate, again testing their accuracy of marking out the work on blank sheets of mild steel. They were then challenged on various joining methods within the engineering industry. The joining methods that the students were being taught were spot welding, pop riveting, self tapping screws and nut and bolt with wire, making a positive locking device. Positive locking devices are used mainly in the Aeronautical/Space Industry and the Heavy Good Vehicle Industry.

The students highly enjoy being in the workshop. They are achieving manual skills that give them a greater understanding of engineering and how products are designed and manufactured in industry, which are skills sought after within engineering industries.
