Are you interested in becoming a part of what is possibly the most exciting change in the education landscape in decades? We are seeking new teachers at our Outstanding University Technical College (UTC) to join us in our new approach to educating 14-19 year olds.

The UTC opened in September 2013 in a newly refurbished building which replicates a business environment with state-of–the-art facilities. It was judged by Ofsted as Outstanding in every category in May 2015, in only its second year of operation.

At capacity we will be educating 600 students who will all have a passion for Engineering or Computer Science; it will be a truly inspirational environment.

Meet the team

Jonathan Nicholls (Principal)

“I joined UTC Reading as an Assistant Principal in September 2014 and was responsible for the Engineering and Science subjects and specialisms. Since then I have moved into the Vice Principal Role and from June 2017 I became the Principal. What immediately struck me when I first joined UTC Reading and the same is true now that it does not feel like a school. It feels like a place of work where everyone, staff and students alike were working towards a common goal, are prepared to go the extra mile and want to set themselves and the school apart from the norm.

Stephanie Mitchell (Director of Industry Relations and Teacher of Design, Technology and Engineering)

"I joined UTC Reading this September, as Director of Industry Relations and as a teacher of Design, Technology and Engineering. Since starting, what I found most inspiring was the vibrant and forward thinking ethos of the school.

Neill Seavers (Mathematics Teacher)

 “I have always enjoyed mathematics as a subject, taking two maths O-levels (Maths and Statistics) and two A-levels (Maths and Further Maths) at school, and then reading Aeronautics at degree level - which included a significant mathematics component in aerodynamics, flight dynamics and aircraft propulsion.

"I worked for over 25 years in defence research organisations including the MoD’s Royal Aircraft Establishment, DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency), and QinetiQ. My career involved mathematics in flight simulation, air combat simulation, air systems research and experimental analysis. I am a hard-working and motivated individual and achieved a fair measure of success in my aeronautics career including being awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society's silver medal for flight simulation. I also represented the MoD in multi-national collaborative applied research programmes with the U.S. and European allies, and led multi-national operational analysis experiments involving aircrew and scientists from allied nations.

"I bring this committed approach, my research knowledge and skills and my recently completed PGCE/NQT teacher training to my new teaching career at UTC Reading. Having trained in a number of conventional schools I was amazed to find that an organisation like UTC Reading existed, and am extremely happy to be working in what I consider to be a very favoured and exciting teaching and learning college with highly motivated students who really value their education opportunities here and see the possibilities it will bring them.”

Janet Elgar (Engineering Teacher and STEM Technician)

"I joined UTC Reading as a STEM Technician in Easter 2015, focusing on the Engineering element due to my experience as an Electro-Mechanical Engineer. My first project was to get the engineering workshop up and running for the students to be able to do some practical work. Over the last year with the installation of some new machinery I have been able to assist the teachers/students in the workshop. Although working as a technician I have also had the opportunity to use the latest technology of CAD to work alongside the newly installed 3D Printers. With this setup at UTC Reading the students get to use both their hand skills in the engineering workshop along with the high technology of the 3D printers. This enables UTC Reading students to achieve overall a better understanding of the engineering world to become the Engineers of our future."
