Students see behind the scenes at ITV studios

The seven winners of UTC Reading’s recent British Army challenge were rewarded last week with a trip to the ITV studios in London.

On Thursday 28 April, students were driven to the studios and met on arrival by Tom Harrison, Head of Studio Engineering. First on the itinerary was a technical tour during which they were able to visit the ‘lines’ room, where football matches from across the world are co-ordinated for broadcast, workshops, editing rooms, sound room and production room.

Students were then able to move to the TV studios themselves, which were being set up for evening recordings. The tour included four studios, which are used for well-known ITV programmes such as ITV Sport, Loose Women and Good Morning Britain.

Throughout the tour students were able to learn about what goes on behind the scenes of the programmes they regularly watch, such as repainting studio floors up to three times a day to cater for different set designers.

Hilary Lungley, UTC Reading Business Studies Teacher, accompanied the winning students on the visit. She said: “The tour helped us learn so much about the various processes involved in filming programmes we watch every day, which fascinated the students. We all thoroughly enjoyed the visit and it was a fantastic way to celebrate the students’ achievements following their recent British Army project.”
