Challenge proves life is a rollercoaster

Just before the Easter break, Michaela Brown from AMEC Foster Wheeler visited the UTC to deliver an engineering workshop to some of our Year 12 students.

Students were split into four groups and were tasked with building a section of a rollercoaster for a squash ball. They had to build their individual sections to the required specifications and make sure that their section joined up with the whole structure. Each group had to effectively communicate with each other to make sure the whole structure worked, their conversations were limited and they were given a budget to manage.

Lewis Hutchinson, UTC Physics Teacher and STEM Co-ordinator, said:

“We are extremely grateful to Michaela for delivering this exciting workshop. The whole experience was highly valuable and helped the students develop their teamwork, financial, analytical and engineering skills.”
