UTC Reading is 'outstanding'

University Technical College Reading has been officially rated outstanding in its first Ofsted inspection.

The UTC was judged to be outstanding across all indicators in the Ofsted report – making it the only UTC in the country to have received this rating.

Inspectors praised the business-like ethos, commenting that “students are prepared exceptionally well for their future lives”.

The Ofsted report, published in June 2015, comments that:

  • The business-like ethos of the college permeates all aspects of learning. Students are prepared exceptionally well for their future lives in modern Britain.

  • Teachers’ high expectations of all students are matched by students’ keenness to learn and succeed.

  • The inspiring leadership of the principal, supported and challenged by knowledgeable, highly effective governors and business partners, has resulted in outstanding achievement for students.

  • The curriculum in the sixth form is exceptional. Students flourish in the specialist environment.

  • Students demonstrate exemplary behaviour in lessons. They are on time, well organised and keen to learn. Students respond enthusiastically to teachers’ questioning, and instinctively support each other in their learning. This positive approach contributes to students’ excellent learning.

  • Teachers demonstrate impressive levels of subject knowledge, particularly in the college’s specialist subjects. This commands the respect of students and ensures high levels of engagement in their learning.

The Ofsted inspection team found that the UTC is outstanding in the areas of leadership and management, behaviour and safety of students, quality of teaching, achievement of students and sixth form provision.

Principal Joanne Harper said: “Everyone connected to UTC Reading is immensely proud of the school and this Ofsted report recognises the high standards that have been achieved in a relatively short space of time.

“The school is characterised by excellent working relationships with its industry partners, which gives students the best possible foundations for their future careers. Our partners have helped to shape the curriculum and continue to work with us to set projects, offer work experience and providing mentoring. This is what sets the school apart and we are delighted that this has been reflected in the comments from the Ofsted inspectors.”

Limited places at UTC Reading are are available for Year 10 and post 16 (sixth form) for September 2016.
