Calling local employers


UTC Reading is calling for local employers in the digital, science and technology field to work with us to bring industry knowledge into the classrooms and get our teachers into industry, and in turn get themselves ‘first dibs’ on some of the most sought-after young talent in the Thames Valley.

Employers who work with the students in our schools have a unique opportunity to help shape the curriculum to bridge the skills gap, especially in STEM industries, in Berkshire. Those employers are directly responsible for training the next generation in the skills they need in their sector.

And because they’ve created trusted relationships with the students, employers who have worked in ALET schools find they have a ready pool of talent wanting to work for them with the skills they need, because they themselves helped the students to develop those skills. 

UTC Reading already works with some of the world’s biggest companies, including Microsoft and Cisco, but wants to offer small and medium-sized employers the chance to snap up the best talent in Berkshire by working with UTC Reading now in its Industry Specialist Teaching and Knowledge Exchange Programme.

Working alongside the wider Activate Learning group, along with Newbury College and Windsor Forest Colleges Group, and backed by the European Social Fund, this initiative supports regional development for businesses over the next three years, by developing a suite of solutions addressing the existing gap between curriculum design and industry requirements.

Jane Fitzpatrick, project co-ordinator for ALET’s UTC Reading, which specialises in computer science and engineering, explains how beneficial the partnership between schools and employers are.

“ALET gives employers the opportunity to have a meaningful and profound impact on the next generation, by providing inspirational guidance, technical input and by sharing their knowledge of innovations in our economy.

“Working alongside our talented students gives employers access to a pipeline of skills that is unique to the industry-led education that University Technical Colleges (UTCs) offer."

“Students leaving a UTC in Year 11 are around two years above students from mainstream schools in terms of digital and engineering,” explains Jane. “They have been learning in real workplaces and working on industry-standard equipment. So for employers looking to recruit, the bar here is a lot higher.

“We would like employers to impart their industry knowledge in the classroom, not necessarily to teach, but to contextualise learning, deliver projects, masterclasses or live or old briefs with our support, and invite teachers into the workplace to help them better understand industry and skills needs in the local economy.

“It is a unique opportunity to shape the curriculum and to shape future talent.”
