UTC Reading students celebrate GCSE results

Year 11 students at UTC Reading are celebrating this morning after collecting their GCSE results. The Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ UTC, specialising in Engineering and Computing, which offers a strong technical education alongside GCSE’s in a unique workplace-style environment, saw grades improve from 2018 across all subjects.

In addition, the year 11 cohort achieved over 150 professional qualifications, such as Microsoft Office Specialist. These additional qualifications, not counted in league tables, are highly recognised by employers and will support the students with their destination aspirations for the future.

These results are a good foundation for students who are going on to further study in the Sixth Form at UTC Reading or other post 16 educational providers.

Principal of UTC Reading, Jonathan Nicholls, said: “Our Year 11 students have achieved a great deal in the two years since they joined the UTC.

“They have not only gained academic qualifications but have also learned useful workplace skills and had valuable real-world project experience thanks to our industry partners.

“They have worked hard and we look forward to helping them continue to develop their skills in the Sixth Form and wish every success to those students moving to other post-16 institutions."

Joanne Harper, CEO of Activate Learning Education Trust, said: “I would like to congratulate all students for their achievements in their GCSE examinations. Furthermore, I would encourage students to reflect upon all of the other qualifications and work place skills they have developed over the last two years.

“We must not forget the partnership work that has supported the students to grow as individuals, these include parents, staff, employers, careers support and fellow students; my thanks must go to everyone involved.”

Students at UTC Reading benefit from a wide range of opportunities outside the classroom. For example, this year the students took part in the Royal Navy Engineering Challenge, residential learning weekends, Industry lead hackathons, maths and AI challenge, focused coaching programmes amongst work experience opportunities with our fantastic industry partners. The combination of their academic achievement together with the breadth of personal development will set all of the year 11 students up for a successful future.
