Last week UTC Reading played host to its first STEM focussed summer school. Over the course of the week the students got to experiment with robotics, maths, technology and creative challenges as well as have talks from inspirational speakers:
-
Amelia Womack (deputy leader of the Green party)
-
Anika Mehangra and Radhika Parmer
-
John Bickerton
-
Dr David Acheson
Siobhan Tyson, Head of science at UTC Reading, said: “What an amazing week at UTC Reading’s first STEM summer school. 336 science experiments were completed and there was fierce competition in the end of week marble run challenge, with 12 amazing designs.”
We asked the attendees what they thought:
“It’s the first STEM school I’ve been to and it’s been so fun and interesting. We covered chemistry and physics, and in chemistry we got to look at how fireworks get their colours – we burned metal iron to find out. My favourite part has been the science experiments!”
“I loved racing the Formula 1 cars, that’s been my highlight of the week! I really want to come back again next year.”
“My mum told me about the STEM Summer School and I couldn’t wait to come along. I’m so glad I signed up! I loved the egg box challenge. We only had a certain amount of materials to make it with and it was really fun!”
The event had awards for individual achievements as well as winning teams for each challenge. The winners for 2019 were:
Science Challenge – HANAJAAA
Technology Challenge – Blue Lemons
Engineering Challenge – BFCD
Maths Challenge – Famous Five
Eco House Challenge – PDF
Special Endeavours Awards
- Lizzy
- Caleb

- Kimuthu
We would also like to give special thanks to our student ambassadors, Sam Riccalton, Abigail Gillespie and Makeda Wynter.
