Welcome to the latest edition of the UTC Reading newsletter. Take a look at the range of exciting activities that have been taking place over the past term:
HRH, The Princess Royal visits UTC Reading to launch online resource to help girls find rewarding careers in STEM
UTC Reading received a visit from HRH, The Princess Royal and Patron of WISE, to mark the launch of a new online career game for young girls, with a group of UTC Reading students being the first to test it out.
KS5 students take part in final UTC Pipeline Programme session of the academic year
On Friday 29 March, KS5 students attended their final UTC Pipeline Programme day of the academic year.
Since September, students in Year 12 and 13 have teamed up with their chosen industry expert for four sessions across the year, to help develop the skills that are needed in the workplace.
UTC Reading students crowned winners of two categories at Royal Navy Engineering Challenge 2019
On Wednesday 27 March, students from UTC Reading took part in the annual Royal Navy engineering challenge, designing two vehicles that, working together, could rescue a damaged helicopter from a tropical island.
UTC Reading showcased for excellent project-based learning
UTC Reading has been singled out as a leading example for other University Technical Colleges to follow when it comes to working with businesses.
UTC Reading students commended at The Duke of York Awards for Technical Education at St James’ Palace
UTC Reading students and alumni joined over 140 students from UTCs across the country at the 2019 Duke of York Awards Ceremony at St James’ Palace in London.
UTC Reading Teacher becomes Acting Pilot Officer of UTC Reading’s Combined Cadet Force
UTC Reading teacher, Lewis Hart, has become Acting Pilot Officer of UTC Reading’s Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
“I’m looking forward to the opportunities and challenges this new role is going to bring. It’s nice to be entrusted with the responsibility. I am hoping to make UTC Reading’s CCF a valuable experience for all of the cadets that are a part of it.”
Year 10 student, Elise, becomes the UTC’s first CCF Sergeant!
In January 2019, UTC Reading launched its own Combined Cadet Force (CCF), led by Vice Principal and Contingent Commander, Neil Pouney, alongside the support and experience of existing cadets, such as Year 10 student, Elise.
Year 13 student secures prestigious degree apprenticeship with Jaguar Land Rover
Year 13 student, Hashim, has been accepted onto a degree apprenticeship with Jaguar Land Rover, starting in September 2019. Hashim was drawn to an apprenticeship because of the ‘earn while you learn’ structure and is looking forward to a more hands-on way of learning.
Students achieve certificates following UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge
A group of Year 10 and Year 11 UTC Reading students took part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge.
The challenge aims to stimulate mathematical problem solving. Over 200,000 pupils from across the UK returned scripts for the Intermediate Maths Challenge with the top 10% receiving a gold certificate, the next 20% silver and the next 30% bronze.
KS4 students present innovative IoT ideas to Cisco
KS4 students took a day off their timetable to get involved in an Internet of Things (IoT) project with leaders in IT and networking - Cisco.
One of the most exciting collaborations in the last year has been between UTC Reading and Think Engineer.
Think Engineer is a team of engineers specialising in Internet of Things, product prototyping and machine learning. UTC Reading had previously worked with Think Engineer in 2017, when they were involved in a Co-Teach programme, providing invaluable real world relevancy to the Year 13 Engineering curriculum.
Italian student thrives in studies at UTC Reading after moving to the UK
Sixth Form student Traecy joined UTC Reading in Year 12, after leaving Italy to study in the UK.
“I came from Italy to study in the UK, and really wanted to focus on STEM subjects. I did my research and after looking at recommendations, joined UTC Reading."
Sixth form students visit Barcelona on architecture trip
UTC Reading took a group of fifteen Year 12 and Year 13 architecture students to Barcelona, to help enrich their learning in the classroom by providing real life examples of the architecture they talk about in class each week.
Current Student Board President looks towards an exciting future thanks to UTC Reading
Year 13 Student Board President, James, joined UTC Reading in Year 10. Now in his final year, we caught up with him to hear about his experience of Sixth Form life…

Current student set for the future with academic study and enrichment programmes
“The Sixth Form is better than I ever expected. I have a lot of free time to plan my studies and revise. I can meet with teachers and they support me with anything. We are now also allowed to study off campus when we need to, which works really well. You are given complete independence and treated like an adult, which I value..."
Student spotlight: Olly Hurst
Year 11 student, Olly, has achieved the Bronze Duke of York award, which he has completed as part of a cadet cybersecurity course.
We caught up with him to find out more about his achievements, and life at UTC Reading.
Year 11 student aspires to complete Duke of York Gold Award!
Year 11 student, Thomas, has recently achieved both the Bronze and Silver Duke of York Award, as part of his cadet cybersecurity course, and now aspires to go for Gold!
“My aspirations are to carry on the Duke of York award and to achieve the Gold award. I will also be putting the skills I have learnt into practice in everyday life and hopefully this will help me prepare for life after studies.”
Robotics and Drone Club arrives at UTC Reading
The Robotics and Drone Club met for the first time at UTC Reading. The club will run every Thursday from 3.30 - 4.30pm for Year 10 and 11 students.
