Meet the mentor: Gargi Gupta

Name: Gargi Gupta
Title: STEM Coordinator and Lead Internal Verifier (IV) at UTC Reading.
(Outside of UTC, Gargi has also recently been appointed Standard Verifier for other colleges.)
When did you join UTC Reading?
I joined in February 2015, right at the very start when UTC Reading was brand new. I joined as STEM Coordinator and Lead Internal IV.
Why did you choose to work in education?
It’s my passion to help and guide people. Since University, I have always been someone that enjoys watching people grow and succeed in life.
I grew up in India where education was extremely important; it was the foundation to everything. I had that mind-set ingrained from a young age and since having a family myself, and coming to the UK, I now embed that value in others.
I also studied for a Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) course and found that I really enjoyed it. I then used that to help others in society. In schools, I help students to realise their full potential and work hard to reach their goals. That makes them feel empowered and able to deal with any situation.
What does your role involve?
In my STEM Coordinator role, I design, plan and organise all BTEC courses across years 10,11,12 and 13, including setting the assignment dates and the contracts. I also provide resource to the teachers.
The Lead IV side of the role oversees the teachers’ marking. I have also very recently been appointed as Standard Verifier at Pearson which means I now also verify BTEC work for other colleges, outside of UTC Reading.
What has working at UTC Reading been like?
Very rewarding. The knowledge and enthusiasm of the students is fantastic. Also having the partner relations gives us that added edge, and the students huge opportunities.
It’s been good to work in an environment where students have independence and can make decisions themselves.
On a personal note, the team here are brilliant and I’ve made some very good friendships. As the IT world is generally dominated by males, this has been the first job where I have been able to work alongside other females, which I have enjoyed!
What’s your proudest achievement been since working at UTC Reading?
Seeing the impact I've made on students that I have mentored.
Outside of teaching, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I like swimming, watching movies and socialising with friends. I also enjoy being quite adventurous, having been a paraglider and even flown a plane! I also like baking and mentoring outside of work.
