Three of our Sixth Form students James Stone, Aaron Hart and Calum Bryant attended Build Camp during the Easter holidays.
Sponsored by Balfour Beatty and the Institution of Civil Engineers, Build Camp provides students with the opportunity to find out what life as a civil engineer is like. During the four days, teams worked to plan, build and operate a section of railway line across a specially created landscape using real construction materials, processes and machines.
Tasks included surveying the route, designing the railway, cutting and embankments, planning and constructing the line and assembling and fitting a bridge.
On his experience James said: “During build camp I was primarily involved in carrying out important calculations for the setting out of the railway track and making sure that all of the dimensions of the route were correct. The best part of the experience was the insight that it gave me into the civil engineering. During Build Camp it was clear that teamwork is a crucial part of any engineering project.
“My time at Build Camp has also taught me that planning is key within a project. Hopefully they will invite us back next year to become mentors for other students.”
