Induction day success for September applicants
We were delighted to welcome our new students for September to UTC Reading for their induction days earlier this month.
Our new Year 10 and Year 12 students were given introductions to the courses they will be studying in September, before taking part in some exciting hands-on projects. This included a rocketry competition, where they were tasked with designing rockets to be launched from an air pressure rocket launcher.
The rockets were tested on the school field to see how long they stayed in the air, from launch to hitting the ground. Students thoroughly enjoyed this challenge, which was a fantastic opportunity for them to get to know each other and get a taster of what studying at UTC Reading will be like.
Students also took part in an animation project, where they were tasked with creating a stop frame animation of at least 30 seconds using their phones to record and edit. Year 12 students were required to do this using a pack of playing cards, creating a story based around ordering playing cards by numbers and suit or making them jump around. We were very impressed with the range of innovative ideas that came through.
In addition to this, Year 10 female students were invited to a "People Like Me" session run by Engineering Teacher and Industry Relations Manager Stephanie Mitchell. The session was designed to help girls to identify where their strengths lie and the types of jobs they might enjoy doing. It focused on STEM careers, ensuring that they were aware of the breadth of careers now open to them, that may historically have been only accessible for men. Stephanie was joined by Lilian, Lois and Emma, three inspirational engineers from Thales.
Thank you to all students who attended and took part in the activities. We are looking forward to officially welcoming you to UTC Reading in September!
