Teacher gains industry insights during work placement
UTC Reading STEM Co-ordinator, Lewis Hutchinson, has been gaining new insights during a week of industry immersion with a leading local employer.
Lewis spent a week working with Bracknell-based Syngenta, which specialises in crop disease protection, seed breeding, biotechnology and plant sciences.
The placement was designed to ensure our students benefit from the latest scientific thinking and practices and to build further links between the UTC and the global company.
Lewis said: “The placement was highly valuable. I have been able to gain a unique insight into the operation of a large global STEM company and the range of possible career options open to my students. This will help me to enthuse students towards a STEM career by showing them examples of the possible job roles that are available.
“Since completing the placement, I have been able to make references to how science is performed in industry during my lessons. I have made specific references to the practical skills required to work within the scientific field to help relate these skills to a possible career path. By doing this my students have been able to understand the value these skills hold and this has greatly helped with participation.”
As a result of the connections made during his placement, Lewis has arranged several Syngenta trips and talks for various student groups. Some students are going to be taken to Syngenta to be shown what they do and how they work, and two members of staff from Syngenta will be visiting the UTC to give a careers talk. We hope this will give a valuable insight into potential options available to our students wishing to pursue a career in STEM.
