UTC Reading signs up to promote women in engineering

UTC Reading has become an educational member of WISE, a campaign promoting women in Science and Engineering.

This term we have been working to encourage more young women to join the UTC. The Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) have been running an influential social media campaign to promote the fact that only 9% of the Engineering industry is made up of women. UTC Reading has been getting involved by taking pictures of our female staff and students, showing our support for the campaign. Take a look at our feeds on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and show your support by using the hashtag #9percentisnotenough.

To keep our current students informed and engaged, we have launched an e-group using Yammer where our female students are updated with regular and relevant news articles. This week, we also hosted a fantastic IET talk by Mamta Singhal (MBA, Global Toy Design Engineer), who delivered a hugely inspiring talk to members of the IET, our students and their families about the engineering of toys.

Stephanie Mitchell, our Director of Industry Relations, has been on a ‘People Like Me’ training session, provided by WISE, which we intend to roll out in the new year to encourage girls to self-identify with future prospects and careers. Stephanie commented: “It is very important for us to emphasise to young women that STEM subjects and careers are not just for men. We have made a lot of progress this term and have lots more exciting activities and campaigns in the pipeline to continue to raise the profile of young women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.”
