Lord Baker visits taster event

At our final taster event for this academic year, we welcomed Lord Baker, Chairman of the Baker-Dearing Educational Trust which supports UTCs across the country.

At our final taster event for this academic year, we welcomed Lord Baker, Chairman of the Baker-Dearing Educational Trust which supports UTCs across the country.

Before the taster event began, Lord Baker attended a roundtable discussion with our Principal Joanne and Vice-Principal Wayne and lead partners Microsoft, Cisco, Network Rail, University of Reading and Peter Brett Associates. During the roundtable, discussions included why the partners had chosen to support UTC Reading, how they planned to challenge and mentor students and how UTCs will begin to bridge the UK skills gap in engineering and computer science.

Lord Baker also talked about his own motivations for setting up the Baker-Dearing Trust, why 14 years old is the best age to begin specialising and how proud he is that the first two open UTCs have ensured that all students moved in  education, employment or training. UTC students have gone on to study A-levels (at a UTC or college), gone to university, begun an apprenticeship or found employment.

During the taster Lord Baker met potential students and parents and spent time talking to as many people as possible. Before departing, Lord Baker addressed all visitors before handing over to Principal Joanne for her talk.

The taster session was very busy with lots of new faces and application forms being handed in. If you’re interested in applying to attend UTC Reading in September it’s not too late. Simply email enquiries@utcreading.co.uk or call 0118 955 4544 to begin the application process.
