Cisco launch "IoT World" Core Project

This year’s computing Core Project has been launched by Cisco, who are about to begin a series of project workshops with UTC Reading computing students.

The project is based on the Internet of Things (IoT), entitled "IoT World". Students are being tasked with building and programming IoT solutions using Raspberry Pi technology and understanding how these solutions are applied in industry.

The project launch took place earlier this month, where students undertook a PHP/HTML session and received a briefing from the Cisco team. Students were also able to meet their Cisco mentors, some of whom are UTC Reading alumni, who will guide them through the project.

A series of workshops will take place over the coming months, giving students the opportunity to complete tasks with support from their Cisco mentors. An IoT Expo will mark the end of the project on 3 April 2017, where teams will be evaluated by Cisco to identify the best performing teams overall.

Guy Howell, Cisco Executive Sponsor, commented: “The Cisco IoT World project with UTC Reading is a great example of how we are working together to develop talent for the new era of networking. Supported by Cisco mentors, many of them UTC alumni, students have been tasked with building a series of IoT solutions, and understanding their applications within various business sectors. The launch in November was highly energetic, and with over 200 students involved, created a huge level of interest for this technology. We are looking forward to the next workshop, to be held on 6 December.”
