UTC Reading students celebrate GCSE success

Year 11 students are celebrating this morning after their hard work, determination and boundless resilience over the last two years have enabled them to achieve a great set of results for their Level 2 Technical Qualifications and GCSE’s – the gateway to the next stage of their education.

Eager students picked up their results this morning, having waited anxiously over the summer and are now in a position to confirm their places for post 16 study and apprenticeship opportunities.

We are so proud of all our Year 11 students who have shone in so many different ways in their time with us by being active members of the school community. Each of our Year 11 students makes the choice to leave their school at the end of Year 9 to join us in Year 10. For this cohort, they joined the UTC in September 2020, having been in the first lockdown before this and for many not having had the chance to see the UTC in advance of them starting. A big decision to make but one that has proved positive for this cohort of students.

Executive Principal of UTC Reading, Jonathan Nicholls, said:

What an important moment this is for our Year 11 students today.

Having joined the UTC in September 2020 at the end of the first national lockdown, these students adapted to the UTC brilliantly and despite the ongoing disruption of the last two years have demonstrated resilience, flexibility and focus throughout their time with us.

We have students that have achieved results that really do reflect the fact that they have done the best they can, with what they have got, in the moment they are in.

Examinations and end of point assessments come with huge pressure for these young people, but they have risen to the challenge brilliantly.

I am really proud that through their achievements they have secured places either to continue with us at the UTC in our sixth form or to continue their education with other schools and colleges to follow different subject specialisms. Some students have secured opportunities to start apprenticeships programmes.

I am proud of each of the students for the journey they have been on, what they have achieved and am excited about where this experience will take them next and wish them all the best for the future.

We are continuing to support students by providing information, advice and guidance on GCSE results day, and throughout the end of August and early September.

Students at UTC Reading study English, Maths and Science as core subjects and then specialise in either engineering or computer science along with two other subjects. Alongside these, the students have had numerous enrichment opportunities to enhance their experience and importantly have engaged with local and national employers through different projects to help them define their direction and steps to future employment.

Students a benefit from a wide range of opportunities outside the classroom. For example, students take part in the Royal Navy Engineering Challenge, residential learning weekends, Industry led hackathons, maths and AI challenges and focused coaching programmes amongst work experience opportunities with leading industry partners. The combination of their academic achievement together with the breadth of personal development will set all of the Year 11 students up for a successful future.

Our vision is to ‘transform lives through learning’ and the journey our students have been on while at UTC Reading means they are extremely well prepared for the next step.

We look forward to seeing those who will continue their studies in the Sixth Form at UTC Reading and wish well to those going on to other post 16 educational providers.
