Year 11 student Kande Sill has been awarded the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship, which supports students pursuing careers in STEM.
The scholarship, which Kande was notified of in mid-March, provides mentoring, industry sponsorship, and opportunities for professional growth through sixth form. She will find out later in the year which company will sponsor her and act as her mentor.
The application process involved submitting a project, completing an aptitude test, and participating in an interview.
“My project focused on the development of a secure medical drone delivery system to transport sensitive items like vaccines and blood while preventing theft,” Kande said.
Looking ahead, Kande plans to pursue a Level 6 apprenticeship in mechanical engineering after completing sixth form. “I’m interested in industries like automotive engineering – working for companies like Jaguar or Mini,” she said
Kande said UTC Reading has been a great place for her, providing mentorship throughout her studies and the application process and offering interview preparation, which boosted her confidence during the interview.
The Arkwright Scholarship will allow Kande to connect with like-minded peers and gain valuable support as she embarks on her engineering career.
