UTC Reading Trust Board of Governors
The Role of the Governing Body
Governors are able to have a significant impact on how schools are run, which in turn impacts on the employment conditions for the staff and on the learning experiences of and outcomes for the pupils. Governors have a strategic responsibility for the functioning of UTC Reading, with three primary roles:
- Setting the strategic direction
- Holding the principal to account for the education performance of the school and its pupils
- Ensuring financial health, probity and value for money.
In meeting these roles, Governors adhere to Nolan’s Seven Principles of Public Life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
The Board is supported by a Finance and Resources Committee, which meets three times a year, to assist the decision making of the board of governors, by enabling more detailed consideration to be given to the best means of fulfilling the board's responsibility to ensure sound management of the UTC’s finances. This Committee also undertakes the Audit Committee role. The Pay Committee meets once a year to make determinations of pay in accordance with the Pay Policy for teaching and support staff. Appeals Committees are convened when the need arises.
