Join the Team
Are you interested in becoming a part of what is possibly the most exciting change in the education landscape in decades? We are seeking new teachers at our Outstanding University Technical College (UTC) to join us in our new approach to educating 14-19 year olds.
The UTC opened in September 2013 in a newly refurbished building which replicates a business environment with state-of–the-art facilities. It was judged by Ofsted as Outstanding in every category in May 2015, in only its second year of operation.
At capacity we will be educating 600 students who will all have a passion for Engineering or Computer Science; it will be a truly inspirational environment.

Jonathan Nicholls (Vice Principal, Engineering and Science)
“I joined UTC Reading as an Assistant Principal at the start of the second year of operation and I am responsible for the Engineering and Science subjects and specialisms. What immediately struck me was that UTC Reading did not feel like a school. It felt like a place of work where everyone, staff and students alike were working towards a common goal, were prepared to go the extra mile and wanted to set themselves and the school apart from the norm.
“UTC Reading is a pioneering school where all subjects including those that I am responsible for, blend the best of traditional methods of teaching with modern and engaging activities and this is something we do extremely well. The school is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and the students and staff have access to technology that supports innovative teaching and learning activities. The ethos in combination with the facility, motivates and inspires you as a teacher to develop your teaching practices, think out of the box and develop the students into work ready employees of the future.
“Aside from the teaching, there are numerous opportunities to engage with our very supportive business partners on projects, collaborative teaching concepts and many other initiatives that all add to the positive experience of being a teacher at UTC Reading.
“If you are considering a career in teaching or are looking to broaden your experience of teaching, UTC Reading is a fantastic place to come and work and will help develop your teaching practice as you progress in your career.”
Daniel Sydes (Vice Principal, Computer Science and Mathematics)
“Computer Science provision at UTC Reading is excellent. We have four computer rooms in the Computer Science department that are scheduled to be updated within the next year. As well as this, all staff are provided with their own laptop.
“There are lots of CPD opportunities, including access for all staff to MOS, MTA and Autodesk qualifications – these usually cost around £100 each, but we offer them for free.
“We have a full NQT training programme, with biweekly additional CPD on top of all staff CPD. All CPD is staff focussed, offering personalised learning for all our staff (for example, leadership programmes and Learning Philosophy).”
Stephanie Mitchell (Director of Industry Relations and Teacher of Design, Technology and Engineering)
"I joined UTC Reading this September, as Director of Industry Relations and as a teacher of Design, Technology and Engineering. Since starting, what I found most inspiring was the vibrant and forward thinking ethos of the school.
"As a strong believer in learning through doing, spending time in the workshop teaching my subjects proves invaluable for students to develop key skills in their learning. By encouraging creativity and imagination, it opens doors for practical problem solving and risk taking. UTC Reading offers students opportunities to further their learning with the support of industry partners, providing real-life work experience and case studies.
"UTC Reading is a stimulating technological environment, where students can take responsibility for their education, whilst challenging themselves to discover their full potential. UTC Students are held to the highest expectations, which allows them to develop a passion for learning and a love of their subjects, in a professional and safe working environment. "
Georgios Aronis (Science and Electronics Teacher)
"I joined UTC Reading in September 2016 as I realised it is not a normal school.
"Watching students succeed at simple or complex tasks is an experience you can be a part of every day at UTC Reading. Every student has the opportunity to succeed, no matter how small the goal.
"The students that decide to join the UTC are well aware of what it is offering and their behaviour is very good because of that free choice. Most of them are determined to become engineers and this is very challenging for physicists like me since I can share my passion for physics with them and push their boundaries of knowledge further away.
"I feel very proud when I see my students’ lives have been altered positively because of my teaching practice. UTC Reading offers me many opportunities to make that difference.
"Finally, I have many options for CPD and this is great for my career. Thank you, UTC Reading."
Siobhan Tyson (Science Teacher)
"If you are looking for a new challenge then UTC Reading is a vibrant and enriching working environment where there is always something new to learn. The fantastic support and encouragement from senior management will allow you to be creative and to explore new teaching concepts. Excellent labs and outstanding technicians support the everyday running of the Science department, with regular partner workshops and guest speakers to enhance the learning of students."
Neill Seavers (Mathematics Teacher)
“I have always enjoyed mathematics as a subject, taking two maths O-levels (Maths and Statistics) and two A-levels (Maths and Further Maths) at school, and then reading Aeronautics at degree level - which included a significant mathematics component in aerodynamics, flight dynamics and aircraft propulsion.
"I worked for over 25 years in defence research organisations including the MoD’s Royal Aircraft Establishment, DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency), and QinetiQ. My career involved mathematics in flight simulation, air combat simulation, air systems research and experimental analysis. I am a hard-working and motivated individual and achieved a fair measure of success in my aeronautics career including being awarded the Royal Aeronautical Society's silver medal for flight simulation. I also represented the MoD in multi-national collaborative applied research programmes with the U.S. and European allies, and led multi-national operational analysis experiments involving aircrew and scientists from allied nations.
"I bring this committed approach, my research knowledge and skills and my recently completed PGCE/NQT teacher training to my new teaching career at UTC Reading. Having trained in a number of conventional schools I was amazed to find that an organisation like UTC Reading existed, and am extremely happy to be working in what I consider to be a very favoured and exciting teaching and learning college with highly motivated students who really value their education opportunities here and see the possibilities it will bring them.”
Janet Elgar (STEM Technician)
"I joined UTC Reading as a STEM Technician in Easter 2015, focusing on the Engineering element due to my experience as an Electro-Mechanical Engineer. My first project was to get the engineering workshop up and running for the students to be able to do some practical work. Over the last year with the installation of some new machinery I have been able to assist the teachers/students in the workshop. Although working as a technician I have also had the opportunity to use the latest technology of CAD to work alongside the newly installed 3D Printers. With this setup at UTC Reading the students get to use both their hand skills in the engineering workshop along with the high technology of the 3D printers. This enables UTC Reading students to achieve overall a better understanding of the engineering world to become the Engineers of our future."
