Curriculum Intent

The curriculum at UTC Reading will create confident, successful learners who enjoy learning, experience success and are able to appreciate failure as an opportunity for personal development. Students are at the centre of the educational process and are encouraged to participate fully in the life of the UTC. All students, regardless of age, background, gender or ability will feel personal fulfilment through the curriculum.

The curriculum is relevant and provides appropriate levels of challenge and support to students. The curriculum is organised in such a way that it enables students to learn expected behaviours, encourage positive attitudes to learning and enhance the use of working and long-term memory.

UTC Reading aims to transform the lives of students by:

  • Encouraging innovation
  • Understanding the importance of health and wellbeing
  • Building strong relationships based on mutual respect
  • Developing an understanding of the modern world so they are active citizens
  • Preparing students with the relevant qualifications and skills to enable them to be successful in their chosen careers

The curriculum at UTC Reading provides technical and traditional courses that meet the needs of students. It is focused and responsive in order to prepare them with the relevant knowledge and skills required for the local employment sector and the constantly evolving modern world.

The sharp focus of the curriculum is based around Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects, complemented by a selection of other subjects, all of which are supported in innovative ways by industry professionals.

Students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is enhanced through a tailored programme of personal and professional development, with integrated religious education, sex and relationships education and thorough, impartial careers guidance.

The curriculum will challenge and inspire all students and prepare them for the future. The skills developed in key stage 4 will prepare students for study in key stage 5, and subsequently learning in key stage 5 will equip students with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to move successfully on to higher education, apprenticeships or employment.
