What our students say

Reon, Year 12

Reon has been at UTC Reading since Year 10 and hopes to get an engineering apprenticeship when he leaves after Year 13.

Reon commented: “UTC Reading is different to other schools because it feels more like being at the workplace. We are treated like colleagues rather than students and it helps us to feel more like equals. That was what attracted me to the UTC in the first place as I want to get straight into the working world when I leave, so it is helping to prepare me for that.”

Speaking about the skills he has gained since joining the UTC, Reon added: “The exposure to industry partners has really helped me to develop my confidence and leadership skills. Through the core projects I have been able to learn skills I wouldn’t have been able to elsewhere, including project management. We get a lot of visitors from industry and other external places, so we all naturally build confidence through speaking to a range of different people.”

Reon is doing an Extended Diploma in Engineering and A-level Maths. He said: “My previous school didn’t specialise in engineering and that was what I was most interested in so it made sense to move to UTC Reading, even though it’s slightly further to travel. I’m definitely glad I made the decision to transfer and would advise anyone considering it to do it!”
