What our students say
Emma Clarke, Year 13
Emma joined UTC Reading in Year 12 because she wanted to do the Engineering BTEC.
Emma hadn’t had the opportunity to study engineering at her previous school, but completed GCSE Graphic Design which helped her realise she was interested in learning more about designing and making things.
“It was quite scary to move to UTC Reading at first because I didn’t know anyone, but it felt like a nice fresh start. I settled in quickly and really like it here because it’s got such a good atmosphere. Everyone has made the decision to come here and we all have similar interests which makes it easy to make friends.”
Commenting on the longer school day at UTC Reading, Emma said: “I found getting used to the longer day fine because it gives me the chance to get all my work done at the UTC. This means I don’t tend to do work in the evenings so I can go home and not have to worry about homework.”
Emma was also attracted to the UTC because of the links with industry partners, which led to her completing a week of work experience with Peter Brett Associates during her summer at the end of Year 12.
“I got to experience several different areas including civil engineering, transport, buildings, structures and geotechnics. It was a really good week and I don’t think I would have got the opportunity to do that if I hadn’t joined the UTC. I now know that I’m interested in civil engineering and have been invited back to PBA again next summer for some more experience.”
Emma plans to do civil engineering at university in Bristol or Sheffield when she leaves the UTC at the end of Year 13.
